Pregnancy brings about several hormonal and physical changes in your body. Then there are physical changes triggered by hormones. Your body increases in proportion as your pregnancy progresses further. You might feel your body getting bigger overnight. One of the most prominent changes is in your breast size. Your breasts might grow considerably, increasing several sizes. This is the body, getting ready for breastfeeding. According to the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, breasts may become sore, heavy, or tingly as early as 1–2 weeks after conception. What are the causes of breast pain during pregnancy

Well, the main cause is hormones, and your body is on a hormone overdrive. “Estrogen and progesterone made by the placenta promote the development of the ducts within the breast tissue,” says Patrick Duff, M.D., an OBGYN at the University of Florida, Gainesville. “The ducts get larger and begin to produce and store colostrum, the early form of breast milk,” says Duff. This can cause your breasts to ache because those cells have to stretch out to make room. The dual combination of estrogen and progesterone are the reason behind the maximum number of changes in the size of the breasts as well as tenderness , sensitivity or pain.

You might also experience pain and increased sensitivity in your nipples too, but this extreme sensitivity might pass in a few weeks. Sore boobs are more prominent in the first trimester as the hormone levels in your body are steadily increasing, hence causing a spontaneous growth spurt.

The purpose of these hormones are to trigger or stimulate the growth of milk- producing glands, hence preparing the body for breastfeeding in a few months.

What does breast pain feel like?

Your breasts will overall feel sore , pretty much during the entire first trimester. The pain comes with general heaviness or fullness, but having sharp, stabbing pain in your breasts is not usual. So, if you are experiencing such pain, consult your healthcare provider as soon as possible.

What are the other changes in breasts during pregnancy?

Sadly, general soreness or pain is not the only symptoms in your breast during your pregnancy journey. There are a few other prominent changes that you might notice such as-

  1. Growth in breast size – This is common knowledge that your breasts will go through a growth spurt as milk ducts are being stimulated to produce milk.
  2. Tender nipples- Your nipples might feel tingly and it might hurt to touch them. Hence, increased level of tenderness and sensitivity.
  3. Prominent veins- You might already see some faint blue veins of your breasts. The network of veins might become more visible during pregnancy.
  4. Darkening of the areolas- Your areolas (darkened skin around your nipple) will become darker, bigger and you might also be able to feel some goosebumps (known as Montgomery’s tubercles) which provide lubrication.
  5. Discharge- Leaky breasts are a common symptom during pregnancy. It is known as colostrum. It might vary in consistency from person to person or the stage of pregnancy. It might be thin or watery at first and may be thick during later stages.

Now, let’s answer the most important question.

How to combat or relieve breast tenderness or pain during pregnancy?

There are a few effective methods that can help with the breast pain, they are here listed below-

  1. Wearing a supportive bra– Patrick Duff, M.D., an OBGYN at the University of Florida, Gainesville, recommends getting properly fitted for a more supportive bra. “A full-coverage bra will be more supportive, by lifting up the breasts and taking pressure off the area.” Wearing a sports bra or a full coverage bra will help with the pain. Look for wire-free, unpadded options that don’t have hooks or snaps and then wear it at night.
  2. No-touch zone – Your breasts might be a cause of pain even at the littlest pressure. Talk to your partner and let them know your limitations. Make them aware and proceed with caution about what and how you are comfortable.
  3. Cold compress– Cold packs on your breasts can relieve discomfort. If you don’t have one available, a bag of frozen veggies/carrots/ peas can be good substitutes. Just make sure to wrap them with a cloth before using them to protect your skin.
  4. Warm shower– Taking a warm shower may also help ease the pain.
  5. Loose clothing– Wearing fitting/body hogging clothes or an ill-fitting bra may aggravate the pain. Try wearing loose fitting, flowing clothes and larger tshirts/shirts. Our tip- Hog your husband’s large lounge clothes!

How long does the pain last?

Breast pain is common only during the first trimester. It should start weaning off by the second trimester. Talk to your healthcare provider if you are suffering from extreme pain during the second or third trimester. Pain and soreness are a part and peril of pregnancy. We hope that you find these times helpful and useful. Have a happy and safe pregnancy!
